Types of footage retention we employ

CCTV systems from TAP Security help keep properties and locations safe through two primary methods.

First, there is real-time surveillance that enables CCTV users to discover and monitor any threat as it happens. Then there is prerecorded footage that can be reviewed later if a crime or other issue is uncovered or suspected further down the line. In both cases, the recorded footage needs to be securely stored and maintained for future viewing. Video Storage is an essential element of every CCTV security system and equally as important as the image quality itself. We will place at your disposal 25 years of CCTV systems experience to ensure you are advised accurately when it comes to the storage of footage and its accessibility.

Some CCTV systems adopt local storage onboard the cameras themselves or within onsite system recorders such as DVR’s (Digital Video Recorders) or NVR’s (Network Video Recorders). Other CCTV systems rely exclusively on the cloud by transmitting video footage in real time across a network.

Local Storage is used when video recordings are retained at the protected property or site. Most systems still maintain a configuration (with a centralized NVR/DVR setup). Some Modern IP cameras often offer storage directly onboard the camera. While this method presents some drawbacks in terms of sharing footage and remote access, it can have some ease-of-use and connectivity benefits. Because the recordings don’t have to be sent across networks. Storing the footage locally cuts down on logistical concerns but it can make accessing the footage more difficult, require large storage capacity, and presents a risk of data loss if the device is damaged or stolen.

The latest CCTV cameras have continued to evolve with better storage options and far greater capacity. In the last 20 years, local storage has changed from analogue formats to high-capacity hard drives that can hold months of footage. While conventional hard drives are still the most widely used, Solid State storage is fast becoming the best available local storage option. One of the major benefits of Solid-State Drive (SSDs) is that they lack the moving parts of a traditional drives which makes them much more durable and less prone to failure. This considerably improves their reliability and life expectancy while making them much faster and more efficient.

The next major storage revolution has been even more significant. The introduction and popularity of IP camera cloud storage has in many cases transformed local storage from a necessity to a secondary option. As with most data storage, the benefits of the cloud (including cost, security, scalability, and failure recovery) have made it the preferred retention method. But one reason for the cloud adoption for video storage — compared to documents, emails, and other business data — is file size. Massive video files can make it difficult to instantly and reliably transmit recordings to the cloud, especially in a location with poor internet speeds or intermittent connectivity. These factors are a main reason that local storage remains important for many systems and why a hybrid cloud storage that uses both methods is being employed by more and more.

To further solidify the effectiveness of a professional TAP Security CCTV system, direct connection to our NSI Gold Alarm Receiving Centre is the final element. The ARC works around the clock to react to events such as Intruders, Suspicious behaviour, Vandalism, or theft. Activations generated at the protected premises from movement detection devices such as Passive infra-red detectors, Beams or by utilising the advancements in modern Camera analytics are received and filtered for false alarm at the ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) with footage displayed directly onto the control room screen. The CCTV control operators will then assess the situation using the live stream whilst accessing other cameras around the site to get the best possible view of the incident. Should the incident be categorised as a threat the operators will provide audio challenge on site alerting the intruder that their movements are been monitored and they must leave the area immediately. Further action would be taken should audio challenge fail with the information been provided to Keyholders, Police and Emergency services in real-time. Just in case you are happy with all the features direct on your smart phone, TAP Security systems provides all its customers with a free smart phone app to use whenever you need.
